As usual life is very busy at the sanctuary. Where does the time go! We survived the winter snow storms
but had to deal with some flooding in the cat building when the mountains of snow started to melt during
a rain storm. The ground was still frozen so the water came in over the foundation and flooded the two
feral cat rooms and our storage area. What a mess! Nothing worse than wet cat litter and food. We hope
to have a ditch dug along the side of the building this Fall so this does not happen again. We also need
to have some roof repairs done on the old sky lights that are leaking.
We just completed a major construction project to give the cats more outdoor space. A concrete pad was
poured along the back of the cat building (12’ by 80’) and kennels were built. A special thanks goes out
to MJE Construction. They did the concrete work for cost and some of our volunteers put up the kennel
fencing. In addition a supporter and weekly volunteer donated the funds to build an outside enclosure for
the FeLV cats. Lori works in the FeLV rooms every week and now thanks to her they have a safe place to
go and lay in the sun and watch what is going on outdoors. We have added several new FeLV cats but
our population holds pretty steady at around 12 to 14 cats. It is sad but the FeLV cats normally only live a
few years so space frees up on a regular basis.
Our FIV population has grown recently and we desperately need more rooms built in the cat building. We
just recently had to make the hard decision to stop taking in new FIV cats until we get a couple more
rooms built. We added 8 FIV males over the past six months and we seem to have hit the wall. Even with
the new outside enclosures, we are experiencing territorial issues since most of the residents are older
males that all want or think they should be top cat. To alleviate this situation our goal this fall is to tear
down the old inside feral enclosures and build two new FIV rooms. The feral cats will be moved to the
other end of the building into new kennels that will be easier to clean and maintain. We have the
materials for the new feral enclosures and they will be finished and the feral cats moved this month. We
can then get started on the new heated/cooled FIV rooms. In addition we want to enclose our supply and
food prep area before winter so the area can be heated and secured from the raccoons, possums and
birds. We plan to hire a carpenter to frame the rooms and then volunteers will complete the rest of the
construction. Even with volunteer help this will be a costly project to cover materials and labor for the
framing but it has to be done if we are going to continue our mission to rescue cats with FIV and special
needs. Since most FIV cats will live a normal lifespan and reside with us for many years, we feel it is
critical to provide then with a comfortable living space that will provide them with a decent quality of life.
